Regulatory Milestones

The Stop-the-clock period has begun
At the end of February, following The Assessment Group on Glyphosate’s (AGG) evaluation of the comments received through the public consultations held in 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) requested additional information from the GRG in a procedure called a ‘Stop-of-the-Clock’ period.
Since the request is launched, the GRG has seven weeks to respond to the questions posed. An updated assessment report (RAR) will then be produced by the AGG and be sent to EFSA to proceed with the peer review.
In parallel, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) advances the process of glyphosate classification under the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.
The AGG will provide their comments to ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) for the classification process. The RAC will develop its opinion on the classification of glyphosate.

Useful Information

Yield Productivity
Glyphosate operates in a targeted manner to control weeds and preserve farmers’ yields.
Due to its unique mode of action, Glyphosate has become an indispensable tool for farmers looking to improve efficiency with lower operation costs, which can lead to more productive harvests.
Its efficacy remains a critical factor in maintaining crops’ health and productivity.

Precise Application Technologies
The deployment of digital solutions for precision farming has a positive impact on the environment and yield productivity.
Such technologies are very precise and enable localized treatment to control weeds that would otherwise threaten planted crops‘ access to nutrients, water, and sunlight, ultimately impacting the productivity of the cultivated area.
The precise application, combined with the ability to identify infected patches and analyse weed density and weed species, means that pesticides application is minimized to what is really needed to help crops flourish.

Glyphosate- where do we stand in the European renewal process?
On the 3 of March, the Glyphosate Working Group (GLAR), an association of companies campaigning for a renewal of the EU authorization for the active ingredient glyphosate in Germany, hosted a webinar on the ongoing European process, the current status, and the next steps before the planned renewal decision in December 2022.
The webinar also dealt with the question of glyphosate’s importance for sustainable agriculture in general and conservation tillage in particular.
Interventions by Dr. Kristian Kather, Chairman of the Regulatory Working Group of the GRG, and Dr. Jana Epperlein, Managing Director of the Society for Conservative Soil Treatment (GKB e.V.), were followed by a Q&A session.
