Is glyphosate toxic to human DNA?
Over the decades several authoritative toxicology reviews of glyphosate data have been conducted around the world, and they have consistently concluded that glyphosate is not genotoxic 5, 14, 17, 18. These conclusions are based on negative results in numerous standard studies employing validated methodology which were undertaken by many different registrants of glyphosate-based herbicide formulations.
Nevertheless, a number of other studies claiming adverse effects of glyphosate or glyphosate based formulations have been published in the scientific literature. These publications cover a variety of study designs, ranging from traditional study types to unvalidated investigations in various species. However, close scrutiny of data integrity and reliability are necessary to conduct a valid weight of evidence evaluation of genotoxicity findings. Internationally accepted OECD test guidelines, developed by collaboration between recognized experts in their respective fields, provide sound baseline criteria for data integrity and acceptability. Important information and criteria required by OECD test guidelines include test material purity and stability, use of appropriate dose levels/concentrations and concurrent negative controls.
Many studies reported in the glyphosate genotoxicity literature suffer from a number of deficiencies and/or deviations from OECD test guidelines. Drawing on the studies considered both reliable and appropriate for risk assessment, glyphosate is clearly not genotoxic under conditions relevant to human and environmental exposure levels.
